What the Ancients knew about Elementals
According to the Ancients, the following are the characteristics of the Elementals. They have bodies lighter than men, and have souls that can be raised to heavenly stature by love.
SALAMANDERS (Fire)
They can become taller or smaller than humanity, as they choose. They have been seen as tongues of fire in the country and even in homes. They are supposed to have affinity with those born between March 21 - April 20, July 23 and August 23, and November 23 and December 21.
SYLPHS (Air)
They are bigger and stronger than human beings. Sometimes they are of a very kind disposition towards men and can go near them and enter into their service. They are supposed to have affinity with those born between May 22 and June 21, September 23 and October 22, and January 21 and February 19.
UNDINES (Water)
They are like human beings. Occasionally they get out of the water and can be seen sitting on the shores or banks near where they live. They are supposed to have affinity with those born between June 22 and July 22, October 23 and November 22, and February 20 and March 20. The Sirens and mermaids are connected with the Undines.
GNOMES (Earth)
They live in a semi-material substance unknown to humanity. They are normally sixteen inches high. They appear also as dwarfs but they can stretch their forms even to appear as giants, as the Snow Man of the Himalaya. These are the anti-diluvian giants who lived on Earth, which are mentioned in Genesis VI; 4. If a man has a gnome as a servant, he must be faithful to the gnome, as each one has to be obedient to the other. They are supposed to have affinity with those born between April 21 and May 20, August 24 and September 22, and between December 22 and January 20.
